The women of Ladakh are considered as more independent and having equal rights as their “sisters” from other parts in India. The ladakhi lady is the almighty head of the household and the men she has in her strong grip. “She has her own money, she does business independent, her word is law on a high level ” wrote Major L.A. Gompertz 1928. Since then the society is undergoing a strong change. Education, tourism, opening to the outside, army, building up the infrastructure and communication – many aspects which change the social structure in Ladakh. How do the women deal with that? The younger and the older ones? Which traditions should be kept? What do they wish for themselves?
Thanks to the local lady guide you get easily into talks with the women, who you meet. And that are going to be a lot!
