Insurance

Health Insurance

Please clarify with your health insurance provider how coverage is handled in non-European countries. “Minor illnesses” are treated at very low cost by Western-trained doctors, Tibetan amchis, Ayurvedic practitioners, and in hospitals. For “major illnesses” that may require repatriation to Germany, a special travel health insurance policy is advisable — particularly to help keep costs down.

Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption Insurance
Over the course of my work in travel consulting, I’ve been surprised by how many guests — proportionally speaking — actually have to cancel their trip, whether due to health reasons or professional obligations. So therefore we definitely recommend to have one!

Mountain Rescue

It doesn’t happen often — but it does happen occasionally: someone needs to be rescued from the mountains by helicopter, either due to weather conditions or an accident. In Ladakh, such mountain rescues involve quite a bit of paperwork. However, our local partner has an excellent reputation with the military (which is responsible for rescues), and applications are usually processed quickly. If you are a member of the Alpine Club, it’s worth looking into their worldwide supplemental insurance, which is relatively affordable. Please contact them directly to check the terms and conditions.
